Precise asymptotics of ruin probabilities for a class of multivariate heavy-tailed distributions
This article studies asymptotic approximations of ruin probabilities of multivariate random walks with heavy-tailed increments. Under our assumptions, the distributions of the increments are closely connected to multivariate subexponentiality and admit dependence between components. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. Large Deviations for a Class of Multivariate Heavy-Tailed Risk Processes Used in Insurance and Finance
Modern risk modelling approaches deal with vectors of multiple components. The components could be, for example, returns of financial instruments or losses within an insurance portfolio concerning different lines of business. One of the main problems is to decide if there is any type of dependence between the components of the vector and, if so, what type of dependence structure should be used for accurate modelling. We study a class of heavy-tailed multivariate random vectors under a non-parametric shape constraint on the tail decay rate. This class contains, for instance, elliptical distributions whose tail is in the intermediate heavy-tailed regime, which includes Weibull and lognormal type tails. The study derives asymptotic approximations for tail events of random walks. Consequently, a full large deviations principle is obtained under, essentially, minimal assumptions. As an application, an optimisation method for a large class of Quota Share (QS) risk sharing schemes used in insurance and finance is obtained.Peer reviewe
Moniulotteinen säännöllinen vaihtelu ja suuret poikkeamat
Säännöllinen vaihtelu on paksuhäntäisten jakaumien tarkastelussa tärkeä osa-alue.
Satunnaisvektori on säännöllisesti vaihteleva, jos n kertaa todennäköisyys, että satunnaisvektori kuuluu joukkoon a(n)A, missä a(n) on kasvava jono, suppenee kohti joukon A Radon-mittaa, kun n kasvaa rajatta.
On multivariate heavy-tailed risk modelling in insurance and finance
Companies in the financial and insurance sector have to face a large amount and variety of risks. Some of these risks are easy to estimate and model, but there exist also risks that are unpredictable and hard to understand. Financial crises in the past show that commonly used tools do not suffice to model such large risks.
In the insurance sector, for instance, the occurrence of unexpectedly large claims can easily cause large losses that result in the insolvency of a company.
Catastrophic events such as earthquakes, floods, pandemics and terror or cyberattacks create big damages which lead to exceptional large costs for insurance and reinsurance companies. Observations and data from the past are not always sufficient to predict such extremal events in the future since, for example, climate change affects the occurrence of natural catastrophes like forest fires and storms whereas the development of information technology enables cyber crime. On financial markets, return rates of portfolios have similar properties. Most often changes in return rates are small and follow expected trends but it is not uncommon that unexpectedly stock market crashes happen.
Therefore, one has to establish models that consider smaller claim sizes as well as large ones caused by extremal events. Mathematically, heavy-tailed distributions meet these requirements. Heavy-tailed distributions are distributions whose tail is not exponentially bounded and thus rare events with a large impact have a substantially higher probability than similar events modelled by light-tailed distributions such as the normal distribution.
Usually, insurance companies operate in different lines of business, offer products of different types of insurances or operate in different regions. Hence, the companies do not only have to be aware of the risks in every single line of business but also in their interactions and dependence. For instance, a catastrophic event like an earthquake does not only affect a single line of business, but can cause large claims in different types of insurances. Viewing the yearly net payout of an insurance company as a stochastic process with underlying heavy-tailed random vectors permits to model and analyse the long-term behaviour of the solvency of the company.
This work aims to understand how one can model the long-term activities of an insurance company in markets where large losses are possible and investment returns from different industry sectors can collapse at the same time. The work endeavours to analyse the nature and order of magnitudes of risks as well as their impacts in different lines of business.
Rahoitusmarkkinoilla osakesalkkujen tuotoilla on samanlaisia ominaisuuksia.
Työ pyrkii analysoimaan moniulotteisten riskien luonnetta matemaattisten mallien avulla
DiffInfinite: Large Mask-Image Synthesis via Parallel Random Patch Diffusion in Histopathology
We present DiffInfinite, a hierarchical diffusion model that generates
arbitrarily large histological images while preserving long-range correlation
structural information. Our approach first generates synthetic segmentation
masks, subsequently used as conditions for the high-fidelity generative
diffusion process. The proposed sampling method can be scaled up to any desired
image size while only requiring small patches for fast training. Moreover, it
can be parallelized more efficiently than previous large-content generation
methods while avoiding tiling artefacts. The training leverages classifier-free
guidance to augment a small, sparsely annotated dataset with unlabelled data.
Our method alleviates unique challenges in histopathological imaging practice:
large-scale information, costly manual annotation, and protective data
handling. The biological plausibility of DiffInfinite data is validated in a
survey by ten experienced pathologists as well as a downstream segmentation
task. Furthermore, the model scores strongly on anti-copying metrics which is
beneficial for the protection of patient data
Model-Based and Model-Free Decisions in Alcohol Dependence
This publication is with permission of the rights owner freely accessible due to an alliance licence and a national licence (funded by the DFG, German Research Foundation) respectively. Background: Human and animal work suggests a shift from goal-directed to habitual decision-making in addiction. However, the evidence for this in human alcohol dependence is as yet inconclusive. Methods: Twenty-six healthy controls and 26 recently detoxified alcohol-dependent patients underwent behavioral testing with a 2-step task designed to disentangle goal-directed and habitual response patterns. Results: Alcohol-dependent patients showed less evidence of goal-directed choices than healthy controls, particularly after losses. There was no difference in the strength of the habitual component. The group differences did not survive controlling for performance on the Digit Symbol Substitution Task. Conclusion: Chronic alcohol use appears to selectively impair goal-directed function, rather than promoting habitual responding. It appears to do so particularly after nonrewards, and this may be mediated by the effects of alcohol on more general cognitive functions subserved by the prefrontal cortex.Peer Reviewe
